CALVIN PARTY have been variously described as "the greatest undiscovered band" (John Peel), "joyous art noise" (NME) and "angsty rumpus" (City Life) … Angry and heartfelt, tender and cruel. Nearest comparisons, if you must, are maybe the Fall and the Pixies. After four John Peel sessions, two Festive Fifty hits and three critically-acclaimed albums, Calvin Party now release fourth album;Godards Girlfriend for tunes and upcoming shows check out ww.myspace.com/calvinparty. |

Dead Poppies |
![]() |
|
The DEAD POPPIES Acclaimed west-coast guitar band with exhilarating female vocals often dubbed as Liverpool's only true psychedelic band. The Poppies have subsumed the influences of the great and given birth to music which is provocative, invigorating and wholly their own. Their quest for that indefinable spirit - the mercurial muse which coaxed the best and least orthodox forays from the likes of Jefferson Airplane, the Dead and Quicksilver is rooted in a need to tread one step beyond. It is a quest which serves them spectacularly well in artistic terms. Simply awesome. Simply San Francisco '67.www.deadpoppies.com |

Half Man Half Biscuit |

HALF MAN HALF BISCUIT "A band as savage as they were whimsical, provided an unexpected dessert for those British post punk teenagers who lamented the demise of bands with bite" - Patrick Thorn Nigel Blackwell & Neil Crossley had been playing/rehearsing for about a year, before they got involved with the label in the summer of 1985. Generally reckoned to be one of the finest bands to come from Merseyside. The first LP "Back in the DHSS" Probe 4 released in October 85, the band were immediately embraced by John Peel "Surely the best band in the land". The Album which was selling well from the start, took off like mad after the broadcast of their first John Peel on radio 1, by January of 86, becoming the biggest selling independent record of 1986, march of that year saw the release of the 7 inch and 12 inch single trumpton riots which reach the number 1 indie spot, becoming the biggest selling indie single of 86 . shortly after the Dickie Davies eyes single top the indie charts the band packed it in, in October 86 after a hectic year. A posthumous L.P. was released early 87 ;Back again in the D.H.S.S consisting of un-released Peel Sessions tracks together with a clutch of new songs (a CD version, ACD was released later, with additional tracks) They started up again summer of 1990 with some live gigs (Reading Festival) and a batch of new songs. A couple of singles "lets not" and no regrets was followed by their return Album "McIntyre Treadmore & Davitt". Since then the band have ambled along at their own pace with albums released at a rate of about one every two years interspersed with the occasional E.P. along the way there have been many John Peel sessions and a couple for the Andy Kershaw show.
